Care Vs. Cure

So personal story here. When I (this is Cara) finally gained the courage to open the door I had tightly closed shut after leaving high demand religion, I was overwhelmed by the amount of harm it had left in me. I proceeded to go on a years-long mission to heal those wounds, filled with endless self-help books and tactics to make me feel like I was whole again. For a long time, I truly thought that this picture below is what it meant to heal myself:

I had a long laundry list of items to check off so I could finally say that I was my free and authentic self. What I didn't realize during those years of endlessly pursuing "healing" is that I was just replacing the old perfectionist rules of my religious good girl days with new ones. I still perceived myself as being flawed so it's no wonder it didn't work, let alone exhausted me. I was still assuming I was broken and looking outside of myself for an answer.

I'm certain that this is probably sounding familar for you too. After years of having the privilege of coaching clients who have also left religion, this is such a common way to view healing, especially when we were never taught the tools on how to go internally to comfort and CARE for ourselves, not externally, to find the solution to CURE ourselves.

And when I was finally taught these new concepts and learned how to access my own wisdom, I was able to transform my life to look like this:
